Heartland, Changing Directions Going South

I can't say how many bales we have seen on this trip. Some just cut, others have been in the field for a long time. But they always interesting me. Some have plastic wrap others string of some sort. We did find out that most is grown to support their herd of cows in the winter. Some is sold off.
Driving across open land, and with the change of weather you can see the clouds in all their splendor.
In California we don't see clouds like this. Almost feels as if we could touch them or that they are made of cotton.  Thankfully, they are this wonderful light color and not the dark scary kind.
Farms and more farms.  I had the idea when we packed I would have the energy to do some sketching in the evenings. Well that did not work out, just too tired. So instead I took photos from the car. I plan some time to sketch some of the landscape we are seeing. We pass the older tumble down places that really have the character of a past time.. Wish we could stop, but most of the time there is no place to pull over on these roads..  The land slopes away and there are ditches on either side to carry the rain water.

It did rain a bit later, and as I said we did change directions and went down the 30 towards Des Moines, with plans to stop at Ames for a quilt store. Suddenly, the lights on the dash went very dim, so Ralph could not see the speedometer. Not good, but we kept up with traffic, then suddenly they would go on. We decided to stop in Ames for the night. A place where Ralph had been a referee for wrestling several times. We got the name of a GMC dealer for the next morning.

What we eat on the road.. This is the normal food that one gets "free" at hotels and motels. Sometimes you can add a waffle from the waffle maker.  Heavy on the bran flakes. It isn't so bad and I can still belt my belt in the same hole.  Sometimes we pick up fruit to have in the evening. What we lack most of the time is exercise. So we do try to do some walking.. And we took our bathing suits. But the suits have not gotten wet yet. All good intentions. You could say we don't have much discipline.
